Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:8-9 (Full context: Genesis 3)
All she had to do was trust God and believe His Word. But she took her eyes off of Him. She began to let them linger and drift just a little. She took a good hard look at the forbidden thing, and it looked good. How much better God might have looked if she’d looked at Him instead! But as she looked at that colorful fruit, her mouth began to water. She just had to have it. Her fleshly stomach began to dictate the desires of her heart and the thoughts of her mind. As she took that one first step forward, she had no idea how far her disobedience would take her. The searing damage to relationship. Decay and death, although God had warned her. Fear and uncertainty in how it would all play out. Sin would take her further into darkness and pain than she could possibly have imagined. How dreadfully it would stain her children! As for her husband, he joined her in this futile rebellion.
Shame! What dreadful shame!
They immediately set about in their futile attempts to cover their exposure. But just a little the leaves could cover. Meanwhile, so much more remained visible and screamed out their guilt.
Hide! They must hide!
So they huddled together and hid. Perhaps, one of them could not stand before God. But banded together, they might stand a chance. And so they rationalized and formed their excuses. In the process, they began to turn on each other in efforts to shift the terrible weight of what they had done. And through it all, they remained hidden from the greatest Goodness they would ever know. Hidden away from their Provider and Source of truth and goodness.
His voice! With great dread, they heard it float upon the wind.
God had come looking for them. In that moment, they froze and their hearts nearly stopped. Their Judge got right to the point of their problem. Why are you hiding? Why are you afraid? What have you done? Can you hear Him? What did you look at on your computer? Why did you consume that fleshly desire in a moment of instant gratification? Whose praises and admiration do you desire more than Mine?
Excuses! Pathetic finger-pointing defenses!
Now, the torrent bursts forth from defiled lips. “My spouse, my parents, the devil, and even You God made me do it”, we all cry out in unison.
Stop! “Stop with the nonsense” God’s broken heart humbly pleads.
Don’t look at your shame. Look at Me. Adam! Eve! You! This animal will sacrifice its life and provide skins for your covering—picture of a Lamb to come. I, Myself, will send a Seed through the woman to repair and restore—prophecy of a Provision to come. Yes, great pain will result because of your actions. And yet, I will come and taste your guilt, your shame, your fear, your pain. Yes, you messed up big time. Stop trusting in yourself. Take your eyes off of your failure. Just look at Me. Trust My word. And I will take it all away.
